Cholera Treatment: Understanding Oral Rehydration & IV Fluids
Oral Rehydration SolutionsThe primary treatment of cholera is the use of oral rehydration solutions (ORS), which are simple sugar-salt mixtures mixed in clean drinking water. ORS helps replace the lost fluids and electrolytes, correcting the dehydration caused by the disease.
Intravenous Fluids
In severe cases of cholera where dehydration is profound and oral administration is not feasible, intravenous (IV) fluids are administered to rapidly restore fluid balance and electrolyte levels.
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are not routinely used in the treatment of cholera, but may be prescribed in specific situations, such as in severe cases or when the patient is immunocompromised. The most commonly recommended antibiotic for cholera is doxycycline.
Supportive Care
Maintaining proper hygiene and sanitation is essential to prevent further spread of the infection. Adequate nutrition should also be ensured to aid the recovery process. In severe cases, intensive care support, including respiratory and cardiovascular monitoring, may be required.
