How to Test fo Viral Meningitis
Go see your doctor. If you or someone in your family is experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, headaches, vomiting accompanied by a stiff neck and confusion, it is time to seek medical attention.
Check spinal fluid. In order to test spinal fluid for infection a spinal tap, also known as a lumbar puncture is necessary to collect cerebrospinal fluid. If the results prove positive for virus infection, you most likely have viral meningitis.
Take your picture. It is also possible that your doctor will perform a CT or computerized tomography scan of the chest, skull, and sinus cavities. The purpose is to detect any swelling or inflammation that is possibly associated with meningitis.
Wait it out. The symptoms of viral meningitis will clear up in about 10 days. Since there is no specific treatment, focus your attention on treating the flu-like symptoms.
Use prevention. Meningitis in any form is contagious. You contract it through kissing, sharing utensils, or drinking behind someone. Sneezing and coughing spreads the disease, so make it a habit to limit hand-to-hand contact. Thoroughly washing yours and your children’s hands is imperative. Get enough rest, eat a healthy diet and if you have not, start on a good exercise program. This will keep your immune system healthy and better able to fight off infectious diseases.
