Hats & Alopecia
Alopecia is a condition characterized by hair loss. There are a variety of types of alopecia, and it can affect men, women and children. Many people with alopecia choose to cover their thinning hair or bald scalps with hats. There are many styles of hats available specifically for people with alopecia.-
Alopecia Types
-
Cicatricial alopecia is permenant hair loss caused by inflammation that damages the hair follicles. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease resulting in cycles of hair loss and growth. People with alopecia areata are often in good health otherwise. Traction alopecia is a result of excessive styling, causing damage to the follicles. If the styling is stopped before damage is irreversible, hair will grow back normally.
Ball Caps
-
Ball caps offer sun protection, comfort and style to people with alopecia. Many websites offer a wide range of ball caps, many of which are made of soft materials for comfort.
Base Caps
-
Base caps fit snugly on the head and wrap like a scarf without the loose ends. They can be worn with scarves for more coverage and to match different outfits.
Turbans
-
Turbans are eastern-inspired and often include fabric loops for attaching a scarf. An accordion-style Turban adds bulk above the head, creating the illusion of hair beneath the turban.
Night Caps
-
Many people with alopecia experience periods of re-growth and hair loss and can experience pain periodically during this process. Fleece or cotton night caps may help relieve the discomfort of fabric rubbing against tender scalp skin.
