Hypoxia & Erythropoietin: Understanding the Body's Response
Erythropoietin (EPO):
Hypoxia in the kidneys stimulates the production and secretion of erythropoietin. EPO promotes the production of red blood cells by stimulating the bone marrow. Increased red blood cell production elevates the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood and mitigates the effects of hypoxia.
