Endocrine glands release hormones directly into the bloodstream. Hormones are chemical messengers that travel through the bloodstream until they reach their target cells. Target cells are cells that have receptors for a particular hormone. When a hormone binds to a receptor on a target cell, it triggers a specific response in that cell.
