HIV-1 and HIV-2 are two types of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV-1 is the more common type and is responsible for the majority of HIV infections worldwide. HIV-2 is less common and is mainly found in West Africa.
