How to Stop Water Retention in One Leg
Water retention, also called edema, frequently occurs in the legs and is usually the result of an underlying condition, infection, or allergy. It can also be caused by sitting or standing for long periods, obesity, age, and pregnancy (see Reference 1). To treat the symptoms, you will have to determine why fluid is collecting in the area. Consult with your doctor before choosing a course of treatment, but there are a few steps you can take today that will help to reduce general edema.
Instructions
Limit your sodium intake. A low-salt diet will reduce swelling and fluid retention.
Drink more water. Water helps flush toxins from your system and helps move nutrients throughout the body.
Elevate your legs. Whenever possible, raise your legs above your heart while sitting or lying down to inhibit the collection of fluid in your lower extremities.
Get some exercise. Sitting or standing for long periods can cause fluid to collect in the legs or ankles. If you sit at a desk or stand in place at your job, get up for a walk every so often, or get some exercise once a day.
