Herpes Simplex 1 (HSV-1): Transmission & Cold Sores - What You Need to Know
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is the type of herpes virus that is usually associated with genital herpes. HSV-2 can be spread through direct contact with an infected person's sores or lesions, or through contact with infected bodily fluids, such as semen or vaginal fluid. It is not typically spread through contact with non-lesional skin.
HSV-1, on the other hand, is the type of herpes virus that is usually associated with oral herpes (cold sores). HSV-1 can be spread through direct contact with an infected person's sores or lesions, or through contact with infected oral secretions, such as saliva. HSV-1 can also be spread through contact with non-lesional skin, although this is less common.
