Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) Survival on Surfaces: Risk & Duration

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) can remain infectious on environmental surfaces for at least 7 days, and possibly up to 30 days. The virus is stable in dried blood and serum, and can survive on surfaces such as countertops, doorknobs, and medical instruments. HBV is transmitted through contact with infected blood or other bodily fluids, and can cause a serious liver infection. However, the risk of infection from contact with contaminated surfaces is low.
