Cirrhosis of the Liver: Symptoms, Causes & Complications
Cirrhosis of the liver is a chronic liver disease that can lead to scarring and liver damage. Symptoms of cirrhosis can include:
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
- Dark urine
- Light-colored stools
- Itchy skin
- Spider angiomas (small, red, raised spots on the skin)
- Bleeding easily
- Bruising easily
- Swelling in the legs and ankles
- Confusion
- Memory loss
Cirrhosis can also lead to complications such as liver failure, portal hypertension (high blood pressure in the portal vein), and hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer).
