Understanding Closed Heart Valves: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
The heart consists of four valves that pump blood in one direction through the body. When the valve does not open or close properly, it is deemed a defective heart valve.-
Heart Valves
-
The tricuspid valve, the pulmonary valve, the mitral valve and the aortic valve are located between the four chambers of the heart
Function
-
Each valve has a set of flaps known as leaflets or cusps that help the valve open and close allowing blood to flow. If the valve does not fully close, it allows blood to flow back into the chambers in the wrong direction. If it remains closed, it does not allow blood to flow out of the chambers.
Causes
-
A person can be born with a defective heart valve or it can be damaged by infections or extreme fever.
Treatment
-
Defects a person is born with are known as congenital heart disease, and can be treated by medication. Damage caused to the valve can be repaired by surgery.
Activities
-
Children born with damage to their heart valves can live to be active and productive. Discuss physical activities with a doctor. Healthy eating habits and regular exercise help strengthen the heart.
