Instructions
Take headache medications. Over-the-counter drugs are often effective remedies for a headache. Take ibuprofen, aspirin or acetaminophen as directed to stop chronic headaches.
Apply an ice pack. Wrap an ice pack in a dry towel, and apply the cloth to your forehead in 10- to 20-minute intervals. Cold therapy reduces inflammation and relaxes tense muscles.
Reduce stress. Stress can trigger chronic headaches. Learn how to relax and practice stress-management techniques--don't procrastinate, take a hot bath, exercise, get a massage or sit in a quiet room.
Take a computer break. Staring at a computer monitor for several hours a day can cause eyestrain and chronic headaches. Take periodic breaks and rest your eyes.
Drink caffeine. Drink a caffeinated beverage (one cup of coffee or glass of soda) to relieve a chronic headache.
Talk to your doctor about an antidepressant. Depression and anxiety disorders can play a role in chronic headaches. Taking an antidepressant may improve your mental and emotional health, and cure your headaches.
