Food Cures for Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are extremely intense, painful headaches that commonly radiate within one side of the head and occur within cluster periods. Often considered much more severe than a migraine, this type of headache afflicts most people two to three times a day for a number of days in a row. Some people experience a grouping of headaches for two weeks straight. For others, the period is much longer, running sometimes upwards of three months. But there are things that you can do to help avoid a cluster headache, including changing some food choices.-

While there isn't currently a "cure" for cluster headaches, there are certain substances that you should avoid to help prevent this painful condition. Not everyone needs to stay away from the exact same foods, of course, as responses can vary greatly from person to person. To truly understand what "triggers" your cluster headaches, document the event and any circumstances that surround it, including foods, beverages or any other substances to which you were exposed. Knowledge is often the best defense for cluster headaches, so keep a record of your specific condition.
Drink

Though every person is different, one of the main culprits of cluster headaches, especially while in a cluster period, is alcohol. By avoiding alcohol, you often minimize the chances of suffering from these severe headaches. This could partly be due to the dehydration you commonly experience after alcohol consumption, but some people actually suffer an "attack" during their first drink.
Food

A variety of foods can also trigger an episode of cluster headaches. One of the major offenders is processed or smoked meats and even cheeses. Any meat or cheese that is processed or smoked contains nitrates, which is a substance used as part of the curing process. Nitrates are considered a common headache offender, so avoid these types of meats and cheeses.
To further prevent cluster headaches, consider giving up other common instigators, like chocolate, eggs and diary products. Since the cause of a cluster headache is still unknown, the link between these food items and the condition is only speculative. But "standard" headaches are often caused from these substances, so avoiding them is a preventive measure.
