Obstetricians & Gynecologists (OB-GYNs): What They Do
Obstetricians and gynecologists are medical professionals who specialize in the female reproductive system, including the vagina, uterus, and ovaries.
Obstetricians focus on pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. They provide prenatal care, deliver babies, and manage any complications that may arise during pregnancy or childbirth. Obstetricians also perform surgeries, such as cesarean sections, if necessary.
Gynecologists focus on the overall health of the female reproductive system, including the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and conditions that affect the vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts. They also provide routine well-woman exams, cancer screenings, and contraception counseling. Gynecologists may also perform surgeries, such as hysterectomies, if necessary.
Some Obstetricians provide GYN exams and treatments too (OBGYN) but not in all medical systems and countries around the world.
