Diarrhea & Hydration: Understanding Oral Rehydration Solutions
Saline water should not be consumed when suffering from diarrhoea. Instead, oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or plain water are recommended to combat dehydration caused by diarrhoea. ORS contains a balanced composition of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and chloride) and glucose, which helps replenish the essential minerals and nutrients lost during diarrhoea. Saline water, containing primarily salt (sodium chloride), can worsen diarrhoea and lead to further fluid loss as excessive intake of sodium can trigger increased secretion of water into the intestines.
It's crucial to avoid saline water and opt for appropriate hydration to treat and prevent dehydration related to diarrhoea. Oral rehydration therapy using ORS remains the cornerstone of managing diarrhoea-related fluid loss.
