Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection that can be treated with antibiotics. The preferred treatment during pregnancy is a single injection of ceftriaxone (Rocephin). Your partner(s) should also be treated with ceftriaxone.
For pregnant women who are allergic to ceftriaxone, other options include:
- A single dose of azithromycin (Zithromax)
- A single dose of spectinomycin (Trobicin)
- A 7-day course of amoxicillin-clavulanate (Augmentin)
It is important to treat gonorrhea during pregnancy to prevent serious complications, such as:
- Premature birth
- Low birth weight
- Eye infection in the newborn (conjunctivitis)
- Sepsis (a life-threatening blood infection)
If you are pregnant and think you may have gonorrhea, see your doctor right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent serious complications for you and your baby.
