How to Get Rid of Pinkeye
Pinkeye (or Conjunctivitis) can be caused by a bacterial infection, a viral infection or an allergy. The condition causes swelling and irritation of the membrane lining the inside of the eyelid. Pinkeye is usually not harmful.
Instructions
Go see your doctor. Though typically harmless, pinkeye is very contagious. It's important to see your doctor as soon as your eyes become red, itchy, feel gritty or have a discharge.
Determine whether you have bacterial conjunctivitis. Your doctor might choose to do a test to verify whether or not your conjunctivitis is bacterial. Bacterial conjunctivitis is easily treated with antibiotic eye-drops or eye ointment. If bacterial conjunctivitis is ruled out, then you might have either viral conjunctivitis or an allergy.
Wait it out if it's a virus. There is no treatment for viral conjunctivitis. Like the common flu, viral conjunctivitis must simply run its course. You can, however, buy eye-drops over-the-counter to help ease the symptoms.
Discuss treatment options in the case of an allergy. Your doctor might prescribe antihistamines, steroids or anti-inflammatory drops.
