Plasmodiasis: Causes, Species, and Malaria Types

The causative agents of plasmodiasis are protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Plasmodium. There are several species of Plasmodium that can infect humans, and each species causes a different type of malaria. The most common species are:

1. Plasmodium falciparum: This species causes the most severe form of malaria, known as malignant tertian malaria. It is responsible for the majority of malaria deaths worldwide.

2. Plasmodium vivax: This species causes vivax malaria, which is the most common form of malaria outside of sub-Saharan Africa.

3. Plasmodium ovale: This species causes ovale malaria, which is a relatively mild form of malaria that is found in West Africa.

4. Plasmodium malariae: This species causes malariae malaria, which is a chronic form of malaria that can cause relapses for years after the initial infection.

5. Plasmodium knowlesi: This species is found in Southeast Asia and can cause a severe form of malaria in humans.
