Funding for Assistive Technology: Federal & State Resources
Assistive technology allows people with disabilities to function more independently. Assistive devices allow them to perform tasks of everyday living so they can live a more normal life.-
Funding Sources
-
A number of federal and state funded programs pay for assistive technology, at least in some cases. Some programs that pay for assistive technology include Medicare, Medicaid, Worker's Compensation and local vocational rehabilitation services.
What's Covered
-
Covered devices vary from program to program. Medicare and Medicaid generally only cover devices that they consider medically necessary. Worker's Compensation covers devices that will allow people to return to full functioning. Vocational rehabilitation services covers devices that allow people with disabilities to enter the workforce and maintain employment.
Examples
-
Some assistive devices people find helpful include TTY telephones for the deaf, special computer programs and peripherals that allow blind people to use computers, computer printers that print documents in Braille and cars with hand controls that allow wheelchair users to drive.
