Understanding Bile Taste When Burping: Causes & Solutions
Burping bile, or acid reflux, occurs when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus. This can cause a bitter or sour taste in the mouth, along with a burning sensation in the throat and chest. Acid reflux can be caused by a number of factors, including:
* Hiatal hernia, a condition in which the stomach protrudes through an opening in the diaphragm
* Weak or damaged esophageal sphincter, a muscle that acts as a valve between the stomach and esophagus
* Increased abdominal pressure, caused by obesity, pregnancy, or certain medical conditions
* Certain foods and beverages, such as fatty or spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine
Acid reflux can be managed by making lifestyle changes, such as:
* Eating smaller, more frequent meals
* Avoiding foods and beverages that trigger symptoms
* Elevating the head of the bed by 6-8 inches
* Losing weight, if overweight or obese
* Quitting smoking
* Avoiding tight-fitting clothing around the waist
If acid reflux is severe or does not improve with lifestyle changes, medication or surgery may be necessary.
