Lower Abdominal Gas: Causes, Symptoms & Relief

Abdominal gas, even though normal, can cause pain, belching, burping, bloating and flatulence. Lower stomach gas can be caused by how and what you eat or a medical condition.
  1. Swallowing Air

    • Gulping Water

Swallowing air while you eat or drink can cause lower stomach gas. The air becomes a bubble of gas in your stomach. Additionally, while smoking, chewing gum or coughing, you may also swallow air.

    Types

    • The types of foods you eat may cause stomach gas. The body does not always digest and absorb some foods with sugars, fibers and starches.

    Foods that Can Cause Gas

    • Beans

According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, foods that may cause lower stomach gas include: beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, milk and dairy products, artificial sweeteners, peaches, prunes, tomatoes, citrus fruit, brussels sprouts, radishes, onions, pasta, wheat, lettuce, raisins and carbonated drinks.

    Irritable Bowel Syndrome

    • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a health condition that contributes to excessive lower stomach gas. Sometimes the food you eat can effect IBS.

    GERD
