How to Dispose of Insulin Needles at Home
Every time you get a shot, the used needle becomes a biological hazard. This isn't a problem for people who get shots at the doctor's office---the doctor or nurse just throws the syringe away in a special container. But people with diabetes who inject their insulin at home have to learn to dispose of needles safely. Doing this is very simple, but it does require a bit of caution.Things You'll Need
- Thick plastic or metal container
- Duct tape
Instructions
Place the syringe directly in the empty plastic or metal container. Do not wash the needle or set it down, even for a moment.
Put a lid on the container.
Keep the container near your other diabetes supplies. This will help everyone remember that the container is for dirty syringes.
Wrap the container in duct tape and dispose of it when it is full.
Call your local health department to ask about the best disposal method in your area.
