How to Choose an Insulin Pump
Insulin pumps are pager-sized devices that deliver insulin to the body through a flexible plastic hose. Computerized pumps provide more precise doses while still granting the wearer flexibility to control amounts as needed for different lifestyles and activities. Choosing the correct pump is a personal decision that requires considering a number of factors.
Instructions
Research your pump choices. Start your online research with a trusted, objective diabetes or medical website. Learn about the different brands and models that are available.
Meet with representatives from the various pump manufactures. Currently in the United States six companies make or sell insulin pumps: Animas, Smiths Medical MD Inc, Medtronic MiniMEd, Roche (formerly Disetronic), and Nipro. Remember that these representatives may not be objective because they are trying to sell their product.
Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each model's features with your doctor. Make sure to talk about what models will work best for you.
Examine the maximum quantity that each pump model provides. Pump users who require larger daily doses should consider pumps that can handle them.
Choose a pump with an infusion set that you like. Some pumps offer only a limited array of infusion sets.
Consider other features of insulin pumps that may be beneficial to your lifestyle or medical needs, such as a more sensitive alarm to detect needle obstructions.
