Effective Ways to Clear Mucus and Relieve Congestion
When you have a cold, you'll have a buildup of mucus. To expel mucus and start breathing better, learn how to get rid of it in an effective manner. Once you expel the mucus from your body, you're on the right track to recovering from your cold.
Instructions
Loosen the mucus first. Before attempting to bring up the mucus, you should loosen it. You can do this by taking a hot, steamy shower before trying to expel the mucus by coughing.
Keep a box of tissues close by. Once the mucus comes up, you'll want something to contain it.
Take deep breaths. Hold your breath in your chest before coughing it out. You may have to cough several times before the mucus starts coming out. Expel the mucus into a tissue and discard it.
Blow your nose. Blowing your nose expels mucus as well. You want to blow your nose gently. Blowing too hard can make your ears pop.
Use an over-the-counter remedy. If you want a medication to help you get rid of mucus, then take a cold medicine. Sudafed contains an effective decongestant and Mucinex helps loosen the mucus.
