Relieve Rebound Congestion: Strategies for Non-Prescription Nasal Issues
Some types of non-prescription sinus medications, such as certain nasal sprays, can sometimes worsen your nasal problems. Rebound congestion is a term that refers to the swelling of mucous membranes within the sinuses as a result of extended use of these medications. This condition is also known as rhinitis medicamentosa. You can relieve rebound congestion through a series of strategies practiced consistently over time.Things You'll Need
- Saline nasal rinse kit
- Humidifier
Instructions
Use a saline nasal rinse daily until symptoms improve. These rinses usually come in kits in which you spray the solution into one nostril with your head tilted to one side. The solution goes into the first nostril and then drains out of the other nostril. Repeat this on the other side.
Add humidity to the air that you breathe. You can do this with a humidifier, or by standing in a steamy bathroom for 15 to 30 minutes.
Hydrate your body. Drink at least 64 oz. of water per day. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you.
