Understanding Statins: Do You Need Cholesterol-Lowering Medication?
Cholesterol is a major health issue in the United Sates. Studies show that lowering your total cholesterol is not enough. Statins, like Lipitor, Zocor, Crestor and Pravachol, are the newest weapon in the war against cholesterol. Statins work by blocking a substance the body uses to manufacture cholesterol. It may also prevent future blockage in your arteries by reabsorbing the cholesterol found in arterial plaque. Having a high cholesterol level is not enough of a reason to take a statin; other risk factors must be considered, and you must talk to your doctor.
Instructions
Look for warning signs in addition to high cholesterol readings: previous angioplasty or bypass surgery, family history of cardiovascular disease or high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes or peripheral vascular disease, smoking, excess weight and previous heart attack or chest pain.
Be willing to make a lifelong commitment to taking statins. Statins must constantly stay in the body in order to be effective.
Make healthy lifestyle changes like eating a low-fat diet, reducing stress and increasing your exercise. If your cholesterol is still high, a statin may be right for you.
