Zetia (Ezetimibe): Side Effects, Risks & Cholesterol Reduction

Zetia is the brand name for ezetimibe, a medicine prescribed to lower high cholesterol levels. Reducing high cholesterol helps to prevent strokes and heart attacks. Zetia side effects are uncommon, and dangerous ones are very rare.

Function

• Zetia reduces the amount of dietary cholesterol absorbed by the body. It is prescribed by itself or in combination with drugs known as statins, which block liver enzymes necessary for cholesterol production.

Myopathy

• All cholesterol-lowering medications, including Zetia, are associated with a rare serious disorder called myopathy. This involves muscle weakness that is typically reversible when the patient stops taking the drug.

Rhabdomyolysis

• Zetia has very rarely been linked to rhabdomyolysis, a condition causing breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue. This releases proteins into the blood, which can block kidney structures and lead to permanent damage.

Liver and Pancreas Effects

• Rarely, liver enzyme abnormalities and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) have been reported by people using Zetia.

Allergic Reaction

• Although uncommon, some people experience an allergic reaction to Zetia, with signs of rash or itching, swelling, dizziness and trouble breathing.

Birth Defects

• The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified Zetia as pregnancy category C, which means Zetia may cause birth defects. Women who may become pregnant should discuss this potential side effect with their doctor.
