Autoclaving Paraffin Oil: Safety Risks and Alternatives
Paraffin oil is flammable and has a low flash point (typically around 200°C), so it is generally not considered safe to autoclave. Paraffin oil vapor can also create an explosive atmosphere if it comes into contact with a heat source. Additionally, paraffin oil can react with oxygen to form peroxides, which can be shock-sensitive and potentially explosive.
Due to its flammability and other hazardous properties, autoclaving paraffin oil is not recommended and should be avoided. Alternative methods for sterilizing or disinfecting materials or equipment should be used instead.
