Stuck Something in Throat? Immediate Relief & Heimlich Maneuver Guide
If you have something stuck in your throat, it's important to act quickly. Here are some steps you can take:
1. Attempt a cough: Try to forcefully clear your throat by coughing repeatedly. Often, this can dislodge the object.
2. Perform the Heimlich maneuver: This technique can be effective if the person is choking and unable to speak or breathe. To perform the Heimlich maneuver:
- Stand behind the person and place your arms around their waist.
- Make a fist with one hand and place it between the person's shoulder blades.
- Grasp your fist with your other hand and forcefully thrust it inward and upward, five times.
- Repeat this sequence of thrusts until the object is expelled.
3. Seek immediate medical help: If the object remains lodged in the throat and you're unable to dislodge it on your own, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Warning: If the person is conscious and able to talk, breathe, and cough, avoid attempting the Heimlich maneuver. Instead, encourage coughing or seek medical assistance.
