How is syphilis contracted?
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is caused by the _Treponema pallidum_ bacterium. It is transmitted from person to person through direct contact with the infectious lesions, which are usually found on the genitals, rectum, or mouth.
Syphilis is spread through:
- Sexual contact: having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone infected with syphilis.
- Blood contact: Rarely, syphilis can be spread through contact with infected blood or blood products.
- Vertical transmission: In some cases, syphilis can be passed from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy or childbirth if she is not treated.
It is important to note that syphilis cannot be spread through casual contact, such as touching or sharing utensils.
