Understanding Abnormal Sputum Culture Results: What They Mean
Abnormal results of a sputum culture may include:
- The presence of bacteria or fungi that are not normally found in the respiratory tract. This may indicate an infection, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or tuberculosis.
- A high number of bacteria or fungi in the sputum. This may also indicate an infection.
- The presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These bacteria are not killed by the antibiotics that are normally used to treat infections. This can make it difficult to treat an infection caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
- The presence of blood or pus in the sputum. This may indicate a serious infection or other lung condition.
