Understanding Bulimia Nervosa: Purging Behaviors and Their Dangers
There are a number of ways that bulimics make themselves vomit. Some of the most common methods include:
* Self-induced gagging. This is the most common method of purging. Bulimics will stick their fingers down their throat or use a toothbrush or other object to induce vomiting.
* Use of laxatives or diuretics. These medications can cause diarrhea and increased urination, which can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
* Excessive exercise. Bulimics may exercise excessively in order to burn off calories and reduce their weight. This can lead to dehydration and muscle loss.
* Use of ipecac syrup. Ipecac syrup is a medication that is used to induce vomiting. It is no longer available over-the-counter in the United States, but it can still be obtained through prescription.
