Understanding Neurons in Mixed Nerves: Sensory & Motor Types
Sensory neurons: These neurons carry sensory information from the peripheral tissues to the central nervous system. They include:
* Mechanoreceptors: Detect mechanical stimuli such as touch, pressure, and vibration.
* Thermoreceptors: Detect changes in temperature.
* Nociceptors: Detect pain.
* Proprioceptors: Transmit information about the position and movement of limbs.
Motor neurons: These neurons carry motor commands from the central nervous system to the muscles. They include:
* Somatic motor neurons: Control voluntary movements of skeletal muscles.
* Visceral motor neurons: Control involuntary movements of smooth muscles and glands.
Autonomic neurons: These neurons control the body's automatic functions, such as digestion, respiration, and circulation. They are further divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons.
* Sympathetic neurons: Mobilize the body for increased activity, such as during exercise or stress.
* Parasympathetic neurons: Promote relaxation and digestion.
