Supplements That Protect Brain Neurons
Many degenerative central nervous system diseases are caused by the loss of neurons, or brain cells. Certain supplements may help protect neurons in some cases, although more research is needed for many alternative therapies.-
Neurodegenerative Diseases
-
Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease are all types of neurodegenerative diseases caused by the loss of neurons due to different factors.
Vitamin E
-
According to the University of Pittsburgh, vitamin E is often prescribed to Alzheimer's patients. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, meaning it protects the brain from free radicals--molecules that can damage neurons and genetic material.
Other Antioxidants
-
The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests that antioxidants like coenzyme Q10 and dark berries may have beneficial effects for patients of neurodegenerative diseases.
Alternative Treatments
-
Phosphatidylserine, a fat which occurs naturally in neuron cell membranes, may be effective in protecting neurons from degeneration. Gingko biloba and huperzine A may also be used as alternative therapies for Alzheimer's disease. The University of Pittsburgh cautions that the safety and effectiveness of these treatments are not well understood.
Parkinson's Disease
-
According to the Baylor College of Medicine, no medication or supplement is currently known to protect the dopamine-producing neurons that degenerate in Parkinson's disease.
