Understanding the Human Brain: Anatomy and Key Structures
1. Cerebrum- Largest part of the brain
- Divided into two hemispheres by the longitudinal fissure
- Each hemisphere is further divided into four lobes: frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital
- The cerebrum is responsible for higher-level cognitive functions such as language, memory, and thought
2. Cerebellum
- Located at the back of the brain, beneath the cerebrum
- Responsible for coordination and balance
3. Brainstem
- Connects the cerebrum to the spinal cord
- Contains vital centers for functions such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure
4. Limbic System
- A complex network of brain structures involved in emotion, memory, and motivation
5. Basal Ganglia
- A group of structures involved in movement control
6. Thalamus
- A relay center for sensory information
7. Hypothalamus
- A small region located at the base of the brain that is involved in regulating many vital functions, including body temperature, hunger, thirst, and sleep
