DIY Anatomical Splint: A Step-by-Step Guide for Injuries

One first aid technique for broken bones and strained, sprained or dislocated joints is the anatomical splint. This technique requires only strips of cloth and a similar uninjured body part (leg to leg, finger to finger). The following steps will guide you in making an anatomical splint.

Instructions

    • 1

Assess the situation. Take note of any wounds and care for them before applying the splint.

    • 2

Acquire at least 2 strips of cloth or tape, depending on the size of the injured body part. Tear a shirt or towel to create the needed strips, if needed. Belts or neckties can also be convenient to use.

    • 3

Place the strips of cloth under both the injured and uninjured body part. Place at least 1 strip above the injury and at least 1 strip below the injury.

    • 4

Check for circulation. The ties should be snug and secure but should not cut off blood flow.

    • 5

Tie the strips of cloth snugly around both body parts, securing the injured body part to the uninjured body part.

    • 6

Wait for medical help to come to you, if possible. If necessary, carefully transport the injured person to safety.
