Merry Walker: Design Specs & Material Information

The Merry Walker assists individuals who can no longer walk comfortably on their own. The walker is available in styles with or without seats and in a variety of sizes. As of December 2010, the walker retails for $500 to $1000, depending on the model. Older walkers are available with PVC while new walkers use steel.
  1. Material

    • Merry Walkers created before 1993 are made from PVC piping. All models made in 1993 or later are made from steel. Steel is considered a stronger, more durable material than PVC piping.

    Design

    • The walker's front arms swing outward. The outward swinging ensures that you will not accidentally hit the gate with your face or neck. If a gate swings upward, it swings towards your face. If a gate swings outward, it swings away from your lower body. However, the outward swinging gate may hit your legs if you do not stand at an appropriate distance.

    Sizes

    • The PVC walkers can be sized to fit people between 4-feet tall and 6-feet, 6-inches tall. Users can weigh between 80 and 600 pounds. The Merry Walkers are typically between 21 and 30 inches long and 21 and 33 inches wide.

    Models

    • Merry Walker offers normal walkers, seated walkers and wheelchair walkers in PVC. The wheelchair models act as both a wheelchair and walker.

    Coating

    • A powdered black coating assists users who have lost their spatial perception. Most other walkers are white PVC, which causes problems for people who lack spatial perception.

    Seat

    • The seat of the PVC walker is filled with closed foam and polyester fiber. It is covered in black vinyl. The seat is fully washable.
