Epiphyseal Plate: Location and Role of Dividing Cartilage Cells (Chondrocytes)
The dividing cartilage cells, also known as chondrocytes, within the epiphyseal plate are located in the zone of proliferation. This zone is characterised by the presence of small, round chondrocytes that divide rapidly through mitosis. The zone of proliferation is located between the resting zone and the zone of hypertrophy, and it is responsible for the growth of the epiphyseal plate and the elongation of long bones during skeletal development.
