Ankle Muscles: Types & Functions - Gastrocnemius, Soleus & More
The common names of the muscles that move the ankle are:
1. Gastrocnemius: This is a two-headed muscle located in the back of the calf. It contracts to plantarflex (point) the foot.
2. Soleus: This is a single-headed muscle located beneath the gastrocnemius. It also contracts to plantarflex the foot.
3. Tibialis anterior: This muscle is located on the front of the shin. It contracts to dorsiflex (raise) the foot.
4. Peroneus longus: This muscle is located on the outside of the shin. It contracts to evert (turn out) the foot.
5. Peroneus brevis: This muscle is located on the outside of the shin, beneath the peroneus longus. It also contracts to evert the foot.
