Chickenpox Contagiousness: When and How Long?

Chickenpox is most contagious 1 to 2 days before the rash appears and for up to 5 days after the rash appears. The rash usually lasts for 7 to 10 days. People with chickenpox should stay home from school or work until the rash is completely gone.
