Most children first show signs of autism in the first two years of life, as they begin to mimic speech, "ask" for things, and play with toys.
Autistic children rarely begin to mimic speech when it is developmentally appropriate. They are very late to make noises, and when children typically should begin using words, autistic children often make grunts instead. Their babbling also sounds unusual.
Autistic children behave in an unusual way in the presence of others. They tend not to make eye contact, and have difficulty engaging in a conversation with others. They are likely to appear engrossed in what they are doing and do not like being disturbed.
Finally, autistic children often participate in repetitive behaviors, like organizing, arranging or stacking items. This is different from cleaning; they perform these behaviors in place of play.
