Sir is the title given to a knight in the British honours system. It is awarded to men for outstanding achievement or public service. The title of Sir is placed before the person's first name, e.g. Sir David Attenborough.
Dame is the equivalent title for women. It is awarded to women for outstanding achievement or public service. The title of Dame is placed before the person's first name, e.g. Dame Judi Dench.
The title of Sir or Dame is for life, and it is passed on to the recipient's children.
