Taking Temperature During a Seizure: A Healthcare Guide
Rectal Temperature is taken when a patient is having a seizure or is combative as it offers the most accurate core body temperature measurement.
- Ensure patient safety- Place patient on his side
- Put on PPE- Gowns and Gloves
- Lubricate the thermometer.
- Gently separate buttocks and insert about 5cm into rectum
- Hold in place while it beeps. It takes longer that oral reading ( about 9-10 min.)
- Remove and read
- Clean patient, yourself and rectal thermometer
