Fibroadenoma vs. Phyllodes Tumor: Key Differences & Breast Health
Fibroadenoma and Phyllodes tumor are both benign breast tumors, meaning they are not cancerous. However, there are some key differences between the two tumors.
Fibroadenoma
* Most common benign breast tumor in women under 30
* Usually small, round, and firm
* Typically painless
* Can be single or multiple
* Usually not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer
Phyllodes tumor
* Less common than fibroadenoma
* Can occur at any age, but most common in women between 30 and 50
* Usually larger than fibroadenoma and can grow rapidly
* Can be firm or soft
* May be painful
* Can be single or multiple
* Can be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, especially if the tumor is large or has certain other features
Treatment
The treatment of fibroadenoma and phyllodes tumor depends on the size, location, and other features of the tumor. Fibroadenomas that are small and not causing any problems may not need treatment. Phyllodes tumors are usually treated with surgery to remove the tumor.
Prognosis
The prognosis for fibroadenoma and phyllodes tumor is excellent. Both tumors are almost always curable if they are treated properly.
