Circumvallate Placenta: Understanding the Condition & Potential Risks
Circumvallate Placenta
Circumvallate placenta is a rare condition resulting from an exaggerated fold in the chorion and amnion at the edge of the placenta. An amniotic "ring" may surround the umbilical cord when viewed by sonogram. Circumvallate placenta has no clinical significance beyond a possible slight increased risk of abruption.
Clinical Significance
- Most pregnancies with circumvallate placenta result in normal healthy infants. It rarely results in pregnancy complications, including abruptio placenta or placenta previa.
