Understanding Functional Ovarian Cysts: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
Functional ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on the ovaries. They are common in women of reproductive age and usually go away on their own within a few months. There are two main types of functional ovarian cysts:
* Follicle cysts develop when a follicle, which is a sac that contains an egg, does not rupture and release the egg.
* Corpus luteum cysts develop when the corpus luteum, which is a gland that forms after ovulation, does not dissolve and instead fills with fluid.
Functional ovarian cysts are usually harmless and do not cause any symptoms. However, some cysts can cause pain, swelling, or other symptoms. If you are experiencing any symptoms that may be related to an ovarian cyst, it is important to see your doctor for evaluation.
