Most people barely notice a single missing lash, but a sudden increase in shedding can signal an underlying issue.

While eyelashes do regenerate in the vast majority of cases, several factors can slow the cycle. Below is a concise overview of the eyelash life cycle.

The lifespan of an individual lash ranges from four to eleven months and consists of three distinct phases:

  • Growth (anagen) phase: Lasts 4–10 weeks. An eyelash elongates at roughly 0.12–0.14 mm per day.
  • Degeneration (catagen) phase: Growth stops and the hair follicle begins to shrink.
  • Resting (telogen) phase: The final stage during which the lash is shed.

If a lash is trimmed or lightly burned, it generally takes about six weeks to reappear, provided the follicle and eyelid are unharmed.

Biotin (vitamin B7) is often marketed for hair health because it helps convert nutrients into energy. Scientific support for biotin’s role in eyelash regrowth is limited, but correcting a documented deficiency can be beneficial.

Eating a balanced diet

Protein‑rich foods such as eggs provide both amino acids and biotin. Iron‑dense options—spinach, lean red meat, lentils—are important because iron deficiency is linked to hair shedding. Including fatty fish, sweet potatoes, and nuts can further supply essential fatty acids and antioxidants.

Applying castor oil

Animal studies have shown that topical castor oil can stimulate hair growth, though human data are sparse. If you choose to try it, apply a small amount to the lash line with a clean brush and monitor for irritation.

Using an eyelash growth serum

The FDA‑approved prescription product Latisse (bimatoprost) has robust clinical evidence for increasing lash length, thickness, and darkness. Possible side effects include ocular irritation and permanent iris pigmentation. Over‑the‑counter serums vary widely in formulation; their efficacy is less certain.
