Butt Chin vs. Dimpled Chin: Understanding the Difference

"Butt chin" and "dimpled chin" describe different chin morphologies. Both are normal anatomical variations.

Butt Chin (Cleft Chin)

• Appearance: A central Y-shaped or vertical indentation/fossa in the chin.
• Cause: Incomplete fusion of the two mandibular symphysis halves during fetal development. The mentalis muscles attach on either side, creating the cleft.
• Inheritance: Autosomal dominant with variable penetrance. Often runs in families.
• Synonyms: Cleft chin, chin cleft, dimpled chin (sometimes used interchangeably, but technically distinct).

Dimpled Chin (Simple Dimple)

• Appearance: A small, circular or oval depression in the chin skin, usually midline.
• Cause: A fibrous tether between dermis and underlying periosteum/muscle. Not a bony cleft.
• Inheritance: Also often dominant.
• Can coexist: A person can have both a bony cleft and a soft tissue dimple.
