Allergy to Pitaya (Dragon Fruit): A Case Report
Introduction:
Pitaya or dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus), a tropical fruit originating from Central America, is widely consumed due to its appealing appearance, unique taste, and purported health benefits. While generally considered safe, there have been limited reports of allergic reactions to pitaya. Here, we report the case of a patient who experienced an anaphylactic reaction after consuming dragon fruit for the first time.
Case Report:
A 35-year-old female presented to the emergency department with generalized hives, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness within minutes of consuming a slice of dragon fruit at a restaurant. She had no previous history of allergies or food sensitivities. Her vital signs were normal except for a slightly elevated heart rate, and her physical examination revealed diffuse urticaria without angioedema.
She was immediately administered intramuscular epinephrine and intravenous antihistamines and steroids, resulting in rapid symptom improvement. Skin prick and intradermal allergy tests performed the following day confirmed a positive reaction to dragon fruit. The patient was advised to avoid dragon fruit and provided with an epinephrine auto-injector for self-administration in case of future accidental exposures.
Discussion:
This case emphasizes the potential for severe allergic reactions to dragon fruit, even in individuals without a history of allergies. Although rare, it highlights the importance of recognizing and managing dragon fruit allergy for patient safety. Healthcare professionals should be aware of this potential allergen and conduct appropriate allergy testing in individuals with suspected reactions. Further research is needed to elucidate the prevalence, cross-reactivity patterns, and allergen components responsible for dragon fruit allergy to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate management strategies.
Conclusion:
Dragon fruit can induce anaphylaxis in susceptible individuals. As consumption of this fruit becomes more widespread, awareness and prompt management of dragon fruit allergy are crucial to prevent severe allergic reactions.
