Understanding Stitch Itch: Causes & Relief
Stitches do not always itch. However, when they do, it is usually due to a combination of factors:
- Inflammation: Stitches are essentially small wounds, and like any wound, they can cause inflammation. This inflammation can lead to the release of histamine, a chemical that causes itching.
- Dry skin: The area around stitches can become dry and irritated, which can also lead to itching.
- Allergic reaction: Some people may develop an allergic reaction to the material used for the stitches, which can also cause itching.
- Nerves: Stitches can sometimes irritate the nerves around the wound, which can cause a sensation of itching.
